Graduate Route → Skilled Worker: The Real Path
The Graduate Route (2 years post-study, no job offer needed) is unsponsored — you can work anywhere while you search. To convert to long-term settlement, you generally need a job at or above the £41,700 Skilled Worker threshold (or the sector 'going rate', whichever is higher) from one of over 90,000 UK-licensed sponsors. Technology (8,000+ sponsoring firms) and healthcare are the most consistent sponsor sectors; hospitality and retail rarely sponsor.
The New Entrant Discount — Directly Relevant to Recent Graduates
Recent graduates on their first Skilled Worker application can often qualify at a reduced £33,400 threshold instead of the full £41,700. To claim it, you must be under 26, in your first job after study, or switching directly from a Student or Graduate visa — and you must apply within 2 years of holding that student/graduate status, with your combined time on New Entrant plus Graduate visa status capped at 4 years total. Note that the New Entrant route requires only 70% of your occupation's going rate (versus 100% for the similarly-priced Immigration Salary List route), so the two discounts aren't interchangeable even though they share the same £33,400 cash floor. From 8 January 2026, first-time Skilled Worker applicants must also demonstrate B2-level English, a requirement that didn't exist for earlier cohorts. There's also a separate hourly floor of £17.13/hour that applies alongside whichever annual figure you're assessed against — your salary must clear both tests.

Worth understanding why sponsorship has genuinely tightened, not just the numbers: total employer cost per sponsored worker has risen by roughly £18,000-35,000/year once National Insurance, pension contributions, the Immigration Skills Charge, and the Immigration Health Surcharge are all factored in on top of the higher salary threshold itself.
