The Skilled Worker visa is the UK's main work route and requires a job offer from a Home Office-licensed sponsor. Since 22 July 2025, roles must sit at RQF Level 6 (graduate level) or above, and pay must clear both a general cash threshold — £41,700/year for most standard applications — and the published "going rate" for the job's SOC 2020 occupation code, whichever is higher. The Spouse/Partner visa lets a British citizen or settled person sponsor a partner to join them in the UK. It requires a minimum income threshold from the sponsoring partner (or savings-based alternative), proof of a genuine relationship, and suitable accommodation — this route has no job offer or points test, but the financial requirement has been one of the most frequently litigated parts of UK immigration rules. Health and Care Worker visas operate under their own, generally lower salary bands (from roughly £25,000–£31,300 depending on role and transitional status) because the sector sits on a separate salary structure — but overseas recruitment specifically for care worker and senior care worker roles closed on 22 July 2025, with transitional in-country switching allowed only until 22 July 2028.

The Global Talent visa suits recognised leaders or emerging talent in academia, research, arts, culture, or digital technology — it requires an endorsement from a relevant UK body rather than employer sponsorship, and offers a faster route to settlement (3 years instead of 5, for those endorsed as exceptional talent) than Skilled Worker.

• Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) — issued by your employer, now costing £525 per certificate (up from roughly £239); it must reference the correct SOC 2020 code and be used within its validity window
• English language evidence — a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a Home Office-approved provider, a degree taught in English verified by UK ENIC, or exemption by nationality; new Skilled Worker applicants from 8 January 2026 need CEFR B2, up from B1
• Proof of funds — usually not required if your sponsor confirms they'll cover your maintenance, otherwise a specified minimum balance held for 28 days before applying
• Criminal record certificate — required for jobs in education, health, or social care sectors specifically
• Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) payment — paid upfront for the full visa duration, giving access to the NHS
• Tuberculosis test results — required for applicants from a list of specified countries with high TB incidence

Payslips, bank statements, and an employer letter confirming continued sponsorship become essential later, at extension or ILR stage — start keeping consistent records from day one rather than reconstructing them years later.

Many of these costs (CoS, Skills Charge) fall on the employer by law, but visa fees, the Health Surcharge, and dependant costs typically fall on the applicant. A family of four renewing a 3-year visa can easily face a £15,000+ combined bill once the Health Surcharge and dependant fees are included — budget for the whole family, not just yourself, when comparing UK sponsorship to other routes.

Before applying: Secure a job offer from a licensed sponsor, confirm your SOC code and salary meet both the general threshold and going rate, and sit any required English test — this stage has no fixed timeline and depends entirely on your job search.

Application to decision: Standard Skilled Worker applications from outside the UK are typically decided within 3 weeks; priority services (extra fee) can bring this down to a few days. In-country switching or extension applications typically take up to 8 weeks.

Years 1–5: You can extend or switch sponsors as needed, but each change requires a new Certificate of Sponsorship and resets some compliance checks — track your continuous residence carefully, since ILR requires no more than 180 days outside the UK in any rolling 12-month period.

Year 5 — ILR: Under current rules, apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (Settlement (Other), form SET(O)) once you've completed 5 years, hold a salary meeting the threshold in force at that date (not when you started), have passed the Life in the UK Test, and meet the B1 English requirement. Processing is typically 6 months standard, often 8-12 weeks in practice. Note that a Home Office White Paper has proposed extending this to a 10-year qualifying period with an "earned settlement" fast-track — this is not yet in force as of mid-2026, and the current 5-year route remains fully valid.

• Salary or going-rate shortfall — even £1 below the applicable threshold on the CoS date is grounds for refusal; UKVI checks against the going rate in force on that specific date, not when the job offer was made
• Wrong SOC code — selecting a code that sounds close to the role rather than one matching actual day-to-day duties is one of the most common and most scrutinised issues, especially where the salary is borderline
• Non-compliant salary structure — only guaranteed basic PAYE pay counts; bonuses, overtime, allowances, and benefits-in-kind are excluded, and visa-fee "clawback" arrangements must generally be deducted from the headline salary figure
• Insufficient relationship evidence for spouse visas — inconsistent timelines, thin communication records, or no evidence of shared life together are the most common spouse-visa refusal grounds
• English evidence gaps — using an SELT provider not on the Home Office-approved list, or a degree that UK ENIC doesn't verify as English-taught, can invalidate otherwise adequate English evidence

Skilled Worker visa holders must remain employed by a licensed sponsor in a role that still meets the skill and salary requirements — if you're made redundant, you generally have 60 days to find a new sponsor or switch to another eligible visa category before your permission is curtailed.

Once granted ILR, you're free from immigration control and can work for any employer, but ILR itself can lapse if you spend 2 or more continuous years outside the UK. British citizenship becomes available after 12 months of holding ILR (or immediately for spouses of British citizens who've held ILR for 12 months), via naturalisation, which requires passing the Life in the UK Test again in some cases and demonstrating good character.
