🇬🇧 UK Work Visa Types Compared 2026

Skilled Worker isn't the only UK work route. Here's how it compares to Scale-up, Health and Care Worker, and Global Talent — and which one actually fits your situation.

● Last updated July 7, 2026|VisaCalc Editorial Team

The Main UK Work Routes Compared

RouteSalary ThresholdKey Feature
Skilled Worker£41,700/year (general)Standard route; RQF Level 6+; tied to sponsor for full duration
Scale-up£39,100/yearLower threshold, but after 6 months you can freely change employer — only fast-growing businesses meeting strict growth criteria qualify as sponsors
Health & Care WorkerRole-dependent (~£25,000-31,300)No Immigration Health Surcharge; only nursing/medical/allied health roles open (care worker route closed since July 2025)
Global TalentNo fixed salary requirementFor recognized leaders/emerging leaders in academia, arts, digital tech; requires endorsement from a named body, not a job offer

English Requirement Raised in January 2026

From January 8, 2026, new applicants for the Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual visas must demonstrate English at CEFR B2 level — up from the previous B1 requirement. This is a meaningfully higher bar than before, and applicants who tested to the old B1 standard before this date aren't automatically compliant for a fresh application after it.

Why Choose Scale-up Over Skilled Worker?

Scale-up's defining advantage is employer flexibility: after 6 months with your sponsoring employer, you can change jobs or employers freely without a new visa application — unlike Skilled Worker, where changing employers requires a fresh Certificate of Sponsorship and application. The tradeoff is a smaller pool of eligible sponsors, since only businesses meeting strict, verified growth criteria qualify to sponsor this route.

Immigration Salary List Changes Coming

The Temporary Shortage List provides a time-limited bridge for critical below-degree roles, but its occupations are under active Migration Advisory Committee review, with most entries expected to be revised or removed by December 2026. The broader Immigration Salary List itself is due to expire entirely at that point — anyone planning below-degree-level sponsorship should treat this as a narrowing window.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming the January 2026 B2 English change is retroactive. It applies to new applicants from that date — check whether your specific application timeline is affected.
  • Choosing Skilled Worker for maximum flexibility. If job mobility matters most and your employer qualifies, Scale-up's post-6-month flexibility is a real structural advantage Skilled Worker doesn't offer.
  • Not checking whether your role is on the Temporary Shortage List before it expires. With most entries expected to be revised or removed by December 2026, a role that qualifies today may not next year.
  • Applying for Global Talent without securing endorsement first. Unlike other routes, Global Talent requires formal endorsement from a specific recognized body before you can apply for the visa itself — there's no direct employer-sponsorship path.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Skilled Worker and Scale-up visas?

Both require a job offer at RQF Level 6+ and CEFR B2 English, but Scale-up allows you to change employer freely after 6 months, while Skilled Worker ties you to your sponsor for the visa's full duration. Scale-up has a lower salary threshold (ยฃ39,100 vs ยฃ41,700) but a much smaller pool of eligible sponsors.

What English level do I need for a UK work visa in 2026?

CEFR B2, up from B1, for new Skilled Worker, Scale-up, and High Potential Individual applicants from January 8, 2026 onward.

Does the Global Talent visa need a job offer?

No โ€” it requires formal endorsement from a recognized body in your field (academia, arts and culture, or digital technology) rather than a specific job offer from a sponsoring employer.
