How Indian Students Actually Get In: This Is Not a Simple Percentage Cutoff
Germany works fundamentally differently from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or the UK for Indian applicants, and this trips up a lot of students who assume a high Class 12 percentage alone is enough. Indian Class 12 certificates (CBSE, ICSE, or any state board) are not classified as equivalent to the German Abitur, since Germany requires 13 years of schooling before university entry and India completes school in 12. This means direct Bachelor's admission straight after Class 12 is not available to most Indian students, regardless of percentage, unless one of the exceptions below applies.

What's new for Winter Semester 2026/27: before this year, there was no universal minimum Class 12 percentage for Indian applicants at all, only the pathway logic above. On 23 February 2026, APS India (the office that verifies Indian academic documents for German university applications) announced a new rule: a minimum of 70% of the maximum achievable marks in Class 12 is now required to even obtain the APS certificate, regardless of board, and this applies to both the Studienkolleg pathway and the direct subject-restricted pathway. The change was reflected in the official Anabin database on 15 March 2026. If your Class 12 result is below 70%, the Studienkolleg route is no longer an automatic fallback the way it used to be.
One document every Indian applicant needs regardless of pathway: the APS Certificate, issued by the German Embassy's Akademische Prüfstelle in India, mandatory since October 2022.
