Congratulations on your Canada PR! Now comes the most important phase β building your new life in Canada while following all immigration rules. This guide covers everything: where to study, how to earn more, and the critical do's and don'ts that protect your PR status.
As a permanent resident, you pay domestic tuition rates β the same as Canadian citizens. This is a massive financial advantage. International students pay 3β5x more for the same programs.
| University | Province | Known For | Annual Tuition (Domestic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Toronto | Ontario | Medicine, Law, Business | ~$7,000β14,000 |
| UBC (Vancouver) | BC | Tech, Engineering, Sciences | ~$5,500β10,000 |
| McGill University | Quebec | Medicine, Law, Arts | ~$3,000β10,000 |
| University of Waterloo | Ontario | Computer Science, Co-op | ~$8,000β14,000 |
| University of Alberta | Alberta | Engineering, Oil & Gas, Med | ~$6,000β11,000 |
| Dalhousie University | Nova Scotia | Ocean Sciences, Medicine | ~$8,000β13,000 |
Trade schools and colleges are also excellent options. Programs at community colleges like Seneca, George Brown, or BCIT cost $3,000β8,000/year and often lead directly to high-demand jobs.
Canada citizenship requires 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada out of the last 5 years before applying. There are no "extra points" for citizenship β it's purely a days count. But here's how to maximise your path:
β DO: Maintain Your PR Residency Obligation
You must be physically present in Canada for 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period to keep your PR status. Count your days carefully. If you travel frequently for work, this is your biggest risk.
β DO: File Canadian Taxes Every Year
File your T1 tax return by April 30 every year, even if your income is zero. CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) is the main authority. Failure to file is a red flag for citizenship applications and PR renewals.
β DO: Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) Immediately
Apply at a Service Canada office within days of landing. Your SIN is required for all employment, banking, and government services. Without it, you cannot legally work.
β DO: Enroll in Provincial Health Insurance
Each province has free public health insurance (OHIP in Ontario, MSP in BC, AHCIP in Alberta). There is typically a 3-month waiting period after arrival. Get private insurance for the first 3 months.
β DO: Build Canadian Credit History Early
Your Indian or international credit history does not transfer. Start building Canadian credit immediately: get a secured credit card, pay it off every month. Good credit is needed for renting, car loans, and mortgages.
β DON'T: Work Cash in Hand / Off the Books
Never accept cash-in-hand work that is not declared to CRA. This is tax evasion. If discovered, it can affect your citizenship application and even your PR status. All income must be declared β including tips, freelance work, and side income.
β DON'T: Break Canadian Law β Even Minor Offences
A criminal record can result in PR revocation and deportation. This includes: driving under the influence (DUI), shoplifting, domestic disputes that become police matters, and any assault charges. Canada has zero tolerance for criminal activity by PRs.
β DON'T: Stay Outside Canada More Than 3 Years in 5
If you spend more than 3 years outside Canada in any 5-year period, you risk losing your PR status. CBSA officers at the border check your travel history. If your residency obligation is not met when your PR card expires, you cannot re-enter Canada on your PR card.
β DON'T: Overstay on a Study or Work Permit Before Getting PR
If your study or work permit expires before your PR is approved, you must maintain valid status or leave Canada. Working without authorisation, even for one day, is a violation that can affect your PR application.
β DON'T: Work More Than 20 Hours/Week on a Student Visa (If Studying)
If you are studying on a student permit (before PR), you are limited to 24 hours per week (increased from 20 in 2024) during academic sessions. On designated vacations and breaks you can work full-time. Exceeding these hours is a violation.
β DON'T: Misrepresent Anything to IRCC
Misrepresentation β providing false information to IRCC at any stage β results in a 5-year ban from Canada and possible deportation. This includes: false employment letters, fake language test certificates, hiding previous immigration violations, and incorrect declarations at the border.
